Forgotten Meaning of Christmas

Christmas, a world-known festival, a day designated to the birth of Christ. People has put their focus on sale of goods, that makes Christmas very commercialized nowadays. Hence, the meaning of Christmas is being forgotten.

As a Christian, I grew up listening to Bible stories. Christmas is never a season of big meals and gift exchanged. It is indeed a heritage.

Away in a Manger is one of my favorite Christmas songs. The lyrics well describe the place where Jesus was born. In the manger, “the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay” peacefully. Jesus was born in such a humble circumstances, yet He brought forth the salvation of the world.

I received a little from a friend on the 12th of December. Enclosed were two identical Christmas cards imprinted with a bling-bling Christmas tree. It was unexpected, and I was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. It was a great and seldom pleasure to receive a handwritten cards and greeting from oversea. I sure felt loved. But why two cards? One of the cards was blank with a post-it on the back. The handwriting said, “Is your turn to warm the cockles of one’s heart~”

Is your turn to warm the cockles of one’s heart~

Aha! So this greeting came with a mission! The question was then, “what do I have to offer?” I didn’t want to pick a gift and give it away randomly, it just didn’t feel right. I also didn’t want to miss out an opportunity to spread kindness by rejecting this mission (invitation). I gave thoughts on what to do next…

There was then a very person came into mind. Compare with my other friends, I have not known her for a long time, yet we are very close. In another two months or so, she’ll be gone for further education. I am very happy for her, but I know know will miss her a great deal. I always look for an opportunity to thank her for her kindness and exuberance of good-friendship. However, with my introverted or restrained oriental culture, it is a bit uneasy to express gratitude with body language or even face to face. Words may be a good choice to show my appreciation. Therefore, I decided to use up the space of the back of the Christmas card my friend had prepared for me to write down my gratitude in words and pictures. When it was all ready, I quietly left the card in place where she could find it. At that every moment, I realized tender regards for one is simply, and happiness is just this uncomplicated.

你的偉大不在於你所擁有的,而在於你所給予的。

“Your greatness is not what you have, but what you give.” I think this sums up what Christmas is all about. It is a transmission of love and an inheritance of gratitude to put into practice the Christlike attributes.

We might feel insignificant, our religions may differ. However, there is always someone or something to be grateful for based on the principal of “human nature is good”. As we are not afraid to show love and gratitude, “love on earth” will not be just words that calm a troubled mind.

Lastly, I would take this opportunity to thank my loved ones, as well as those who love me dearly as my way of celebrating Christmas. Thank you all for enriching my life.
